Addressing UN SDG 13

During my design thinking capstone course, my team and I spent the semester learning about design thinking methods and tools. We put our skills to use by addressing the United Nations Sustainability Goals (UNSDG). My team and I focused on goal 13 by combating climate change through a simple action we have all heard of - Recycling.

  • The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals or Global Goals are a collection of 17 interlinked global goals designed to be a "shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future". The SDGs were set up in 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly and are intended to be achieved by 2030.

My team and I choose to focus on SDG 13, “take action to combat climate change and its impacts”.

  • “Design thinking is a human-centered approach to innovation that draws from the designer’s toolkit to integrate the needs of people, the possibilities of technology, and the requirements for business success.”

—Tim Brown, Executive Chair of IDEO

  • In this capstone course, students will examine the design thinking process as a means to better understand and solve problems. Students will develop Design Thinking skills in light of their work as ethnographers, strategists, and storytellers through a hybrid of seminar discussions and collaborative projects. Over the course of the semester, students will directly apply what they have learned to challenges about which they are passionate.
